TUESDAY Procedure
BEGINNING ACTIVITY
  1. 4:00/5:00 students go to computers and open Mavis Beacon
  2. 4:05/5:05 take attendance and other housekeeping items


INTRODUCTION
  1. 4:15/5:15 gather students on the carpet and remind them of the expectations (criss-cross, hands folded in lap)
  2. explain to the students that they are going to practice the routines and procedures for the lab today
  3. this is a good time to review what you guys did at Winter Tech Academy and make sure EVERYONE who works and volunteers in the lab are on the same page (everyone uses the same discipline procedure, everyone uses the same signals etc.)
  4. review with the students how they are expected to behave in the lab
  5. 4:25/5:25 have students model how
a. to enter the lab
b. sit at the computers
c. sit on the floor
d. move from the floor to computers and computers to the floor
e. clean up materials (headphones, crayons, pencils etc.)
f. ask for help, ask to go to the bathroom
g. any other routines you may want to practice

  1. 4:35/5:35 have the class practice these all together
  2. DO NOT EXPECT PERFECTION!!!! if 90% of the class performs correctly, move on to the next routine J
  3. after the class has practiced each routine and performed correctly, they may have free time!

WEDNESDAY Procedure

INTRODUCTION

  3. many of the kids will need reminders about behavior since they have been out of Bridge for a while (remind them of their practice yesterdayJ)
  4. many of them will be eager to share things they did on Winter break or presents they got, but that is next week’s activity!
  5. 4:20/5:20 tell the students that they are going to talk about new year resolutions this week and next week they will have plenty of time to share what they did on their Winter break J
  6. ask the class what a new year’s resolution is
  7. explain that resolution is just a fancy word for promise or a goal
  8. resolutions are promises or goals that people make for themselves
  9. explain that the students are going to create three different kinds of resolutions
  10. the three types are PERSONAL, FAMILY/FRIENDS, and SCHOOL
  11. 4:30/5:30 give some examples of each to help the students understand the difference:
PERONSAL: eat less junk food, play outside each day, keep your room tidy
FAMILY/FRIENS: be nicer to your little brother or sister, help mom with the dishes, make a new friend
SCHOOL: get better grades, study math, read a book each night

  1. as a class, brainstorm some resolutions or promises
  2. begin with some ideas for PERSONAL resolutions
  3. choose one color of marker and write PERSONAL on white board or chart paper then write the students’ ideas in neat handwriting
  4. next, choose a different colored marker and brainstorm some resolutions for FRIENDS/FAMILY; write FRIENDS/FAMILY and the students’ ideas on the white board or chart paper in neat handwriting
  5. finally, choose another colored marker and brainstorm some ideas for SCHOOL resolutions; write SCHOOL and the students’ ideas on the white board or chart paper in neat handwriting
  6. after you have at least 4-5 resolutions for each category, explain to the students that they are going to create a chart and put their resolutions/promises on WIkiSpace
  7. 4:40/5:40 gather students around 1-2 computers to model how to put their resolutions on WikiSpace
  8. first go to http://bridgeproject.wikispaces.com/
  9. show the kids how to click on their site
  10. next, show the kids how to click on their picture
  11. show the students the “log on” button
  12. use mbriggs4 for the user name and bridge2009 (have another tech team member write these in a place where the students can refer to)
  13. click “edit this page” at the top
  14. show the students how to scroll down to the very bottom of their page where it is clear (there isn’t any writing or media)
  15. point out the table icon at the top (it is next to the tv icon)
  16. make sure each student sees where the table icon is!!!!
  17. click the table icon
  18. choose 1 column and 3 rows
  19. click “insert table
  20. in the first row write PERSONAL
  21. in the second row write FRIENDS/FAMILY
  22. in the last row write SCHOOL
  23. call on 2 students for each category to share a resolution/promise from the white board/chart paper or one of their own
  24. write 2 resolutions in each category
  25. at the bottom of the page, show the students how to click “save
  26. explain that the students are going to create their own table with 6 resolutions
  27. they may use ones from the board or ones they come with on their own
  28. make sure to tell students when they are finished working to click “sign out” at the top
  29. ask for questions
  30. have students review each step for creating their resolutions
  31. 4:50/5:50 dismiss students to a computer
  32. assist/monitor as students work
  33. many students will not finish their resolutions today, so have them save and finish tomorrow!


THURSDAY Procedure

5. ask the students what they worked on yesterday (new year’s resolutions)
6. ask the students what a resolution is (a promise or a goal)
7. have 4-5 students share some of the resolutions they typed onto their WikiSpace
8. explain that today the students are going to find pictures to match their resolutions and put them in the chart with their resolutions
9. 4:20/5:20 gather students around 1-2 computer to model how to get pictures from flickr
10. model how to go to the wiki space
11. model how to log on. Use mbriggs4 and bridge2009
12. model how to click on your site and click on a student’s personal page
13. click “edit this page” at the top
14. open a new web browser and go to http://flickr.com/ (have a tech team member write this website where kids can refer to it)
15. use key words from the resolution to enter in the search box (for example, if the first resolution is “eat less junk food” then find a picture of healthy foods like veggies, fruit, etc.)
16. scroll to a picture and click on it
17. when you click on the picture, if there isn’t a caption under the picture title that says “all sizes” then the picture will not download make sure to point out this icon to the students so they can successfully download and save a picture!!!!!
18. if the picture comes up and has the “all sizes” icon, right click and select “save picture as
19. model how to select “desktop” on the left hand side, and save the picture as whatever it is (for example, if it is a picture of an apple, save it as “apple” or if it is a picture of a carrot, save it as “carrot”)
20. make sure the pictures are saved to the desktop so they are easy to locate!!!!
21. model how to search for another picture to match a student’s resolution and save it to the desktop
22. once you have two pictures saved to the desktop, model how to insert them into the wiki space
23. first, click on the little icon of the tree right next to the tv icon at the top
24. ignore everything in the box that pops up except the “browse” button
25. click on “browse” and then the “desktop” icon on the left
26. select the name of the picture by clicking on it, then click “open
27. click “upload” and then double click on the picture in the display at the top

29. if the picture does not appear in the table, model how to click and drag it into the correct box in the table next to a resolution
30. repeat steps 18-23 for the other pictures
31. make sure to model how to click “save” at the bottom of the WikiSpace after all the pictures have been uploaded
32. after they have saved, the kids can check their page by clicking on your site’s tab on the left hand side and then their picture and it should bring up their personal page
33. make sure to tell students when they are finished working to click “sign out” at the top
34. 4:30/5:30 ask for questions
35. call on different students to review the steps for inserting a picture from flikr
36. 4:35/5:35 have students move to a computer
37. assist/monitor as students work
38. when students are finished, they may have free time J
